BRIDGE and PIN to Discuss ways of Strengthening Local Market Linkages for Smallholder Farmers with Georgian Farmers, Private Sector and Government Representatives

Tbilisi, June 21, 2019 “Bridge Innovation and Development” (BRIDGE) and International Organization “People in Need” to held Georgian Farmers’ Congress organized in terms of the project “Civil Society Organizations Supporting Free Trade with European Union“ Financed by European Union.

Media is invited to attend the event from 10:00 pm, in the Hotel “Hotels and Preference Hualing”, address: Tbilisi Sea New City, Tbilisi.

The event will be opened by:

• Cristina Casella, Delegation of the European Union to Georgia

• Keti Getiashvili, BRIDGE-Innovation and Development

• Giorgi Khanishvili, Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA)

• Ondrej Nadvornik, People in Need (PIN) Country Director for Georgia

Up to 50 farmers throughout Georgia will have an opportunity to meet with the government and private sector representatives at the Congress and discuss how to strengthen market linkages for smallholder farmers – existed challenges and opportunities

The congress will be attended by the farmers of agricultural cooperatives from the regions of Georgia. The representatives of the Parliament of Georgia, governmental, non-governmental and private sector, international organizations and professional associations will be among the guests of the Congress. Participants will talk about the challenges and opportunities regarding the strengthening of market linkages for smallholder farmers and discuss the role of the government and private sector in the process of formation of the politics to respond to the challenges.

The main goal of the Congress is to support dialogue between farmers, state bodies and the private sector, that is one of the prerequisites for the development of agriculture sector. Participants will discuss the challenges farmers face in the process of selling their products on the local market and during production. Congress also will give a chance to the smallholder farmers to share and establish new contacts for future collaboration.

Georgian Farmers’ Congress represents the unique platform, which fosters approximation of decision-making structures with farmers and ensures dialogue between stakeholders
